Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth may become impacted during their eruption potentially giving rise to problems such as infection, dental decay and cyst formation.

Problematic wisdom teeth can invariably be removed under local anaesthetic. The complexity of surgery required to remove wisdom teeth varies significantly depending on many factors.

Tim and Sarah maintain a high volume practice in wisdom tooth removal and will be able to guide you on whether there is an indication to remove your wisdom teeth and discuss surgical removal and potential complications.

Further information is available from the NHS and BAOMS websites.

The BAOMS information leaflet is available here.

We prefer referrals from your dentist, although we can be contacted via the contact form

Simple and complex dental extractions

Teeth may need to be removed because of dental decay, infection, gum disease, trauma or to create space for other teeth.

Invariably teeth can be removed painlessly under local anaesthetic.

Removal of many teeth is relatively simple, however unanticipated fractures of teeth during extraction require oral surgery skills for quick and successful completion of the extraction.

Tim and Sarah have the experience and surgical skills to remove teeth of all complexity quickly and painlessly. Tim and Sarah would be able to proceed with more complex surgical intervention if necessary to complete dental extractions in the event of unanticipated complications.

Dentoalveolar surgery including jaw cysts

There are multiple surgical procedures that facilitate maintenance or replacement of teeth.

We are happy to take referrals from your dentist to treat infections at the end of a tooth root ( following root canal therapy ), jaw cysts or pre prosthetic surgery.

We do not conduct periodontal surgery or dental implant surgery.

Oral Medicine

Oral medicine refers to the non surgical management of a wide range of conditions that affect the lining of the mouth or deeper soft tissues eg: ulcers, white patches, dark patches, lumps, dry mouth, coated tongue.

A diagnosis may be possible from a history and examination alone, although a small biopsy, blood tests or x-rays may occasionally be required to help diagnosis.

Some conditions may require long term follow up and prolonged medical treatment.

A very small number of conditions may have a propensity to turn cancerous.

Following consultation and diagnosis we would give you further information regarding your condition and suggest an appropriate follow up regime if necessary.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is uncommon, however its incidence is increasing.

Oral cancer may occasionally develop from a preexisting condition.

Oral cancer may present in many ways, typically as an ulcer, a lump or an extraction socket that fails to heal.

Early diagnosis is important to improve prognosis and minimise the impact of treatment.

Tim is one of only four surgeons in the Pan Birmingham area recognised to treat oral cancer ( with his colleagues Sat Parmar, Prav Praveen and Matt Idle ).

Tim is often able to provide reassurance at the initial consultation if a lesion does not appear cancerous, or arrange appropriate investigations and future management if cancer is suspected.

Benign head and neck tumours

There are many conditions that may mimic more sinister lesions that are actually benign.

Although reassurance may often be possible at the initial consultation a biopsy is usually required to determine the exact nature of a lesion so that an appropriate treatment plan can be made.

Benign tumours often require surgical removal.
