Tim attended Secondary School in Staffordshire, deciding on a dental career following a positive dental experience.

He graduated in Dentistry ( BDS ) from Birmingham University in 1988 receiving several prizes during the course.

During his time as a dental student Tim observed Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons removing a cancer of the upper jaw, an unforgettable experience.

As a consequence Tim decided to pursue a future in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, successfully gaining a post as a House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary ( now Royal Stoke University Hospital ) immediately on graduation as a dentist.

Following his year in Stoke Tim consolidated his Oral and Maxillofacial surgery experience by working as a Senior House Officer in the Regional Plastic and Jaw surgery unit in Wordsley, a Nationally recognised unit at the time.

Progression in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery beyond junior level requires dual qualification ( Dentistry and Medicine ) due to the complexity of surgery in the head and neck region.

Tim started his Medical degree at Birmingham University in 1991.

During his time at Medical school Tim also completed a Master of Science degree ( MSc ) in Immunology, investigating the effects of the then novel immunosuppressant FK506 ( now called Tacrolimus ) on cells of the immune system.

Tim became a Fellow in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England ( FDSRCS ) in 1995 before graduating as a Doctor ( MB ChB ) in 1996.

During the next 3 years Tim worked as a junior doctor in the West Midlands gaining exposure in general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, vascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery prior to him becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh ( FRCS ) in 1999.

Tim started his specialist training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the West Midlands in 1999. During this intensive 5 year training program Tim was very fortunate to gain significant experience and training in the management of head and neck cancer and microvascular reconstruction ( the use of distant body parts to reconstruct the face ). Tim achieved the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ( FRCS (OMFS)) in 2003 prior to being appointed as a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon / Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgeon at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in late 2003.

Tim has a specific interest in head and neck cancer and head and neck reconstruction. Tim is one of only 4 surgeons recognised to treat oral cancer in what was the Pan Birmingham Cancer Network. He works closely with the 3 other surgeons ( Sat Parmar, Prav Praveen and Matt Idle ) to provide Internationally recognised head and neck cancer care at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. They have been at the forefront of developing 3D planning of head and neck surgery and the use of CAD-CAM techniques worldwide, working with their colleagues in the Maxillofacial prosthetics department. They have developed novel techniques that have been adopted worldwide in facilitating head and neck reconstruction. Their team have featured in several television documentaries.

Although Tim is committed to head and neck cancer care he still maintains a high volume NHS practice in oral surgical procedures and secondary care oral medicine.
